Weekend Review - Bison trample Bees on home ice

The Paul Baldwin Agencies Basingstoke Bison completed a successful month on home ice by recording a 4-0 victory over local rivals the Bracknell Bees, before suffering penalty shoot-out heartache on the road against the Manchester Phonenix.

The English Premier Ice Hockey League's bottom side put up stiff resistance at the Basingstoke Arena on Saturday, with Joe Greener the only player to hit the net in the opening period.

Again the Bison would face a battle to breakdown the oppositions resilience in the second - Ciaran Long with the only strike.

However, the Bison would make sure of the victory in the third - Joe Rand's powerplay effort added to by Andy Melachrino, as Dean Skinns recorded a 20 shot shutout to claim the two points.

The renewing of one of the EPL's great rivalries on Sunday saw the Manchester Phoenix move ahead through Frantisek Bakrlik's first period effort, although the Herd would be level before the break through Joe Rand's strike with 11 seconds remaining in the period.

Again it would be the hosts who took the lead, this time through Michal Psurny, but Aaron Connolly was equal to the task - meaning the sides remained level heading into the third.

Bobby Chamberlain put the Phoenix ahead again - but Joe Greener's strike just six seconds later forced the tie into overtime - before Psurny handed the Phoenix the additional point on penalty shots.

The Paul Baldwin Agencies Basingstoke Bison have just one match this coming weekend, with a home clash against the Sheffield Steeldogs on Saturday (6.30pm face-off).
