One in and one out for the BisonThe Sherfield School Basingstoke Bison have made changes to their roster following the start to their 2017/18 NIHL1 campaign with one player stepping forward and one stepping back.
27 year old Basingstoke born Daniel Lackey will take a step back from the Bison and return to the Basingstoke Buffalo, playing in NIHL2. Daniel first appeared for the Bison in their 2015/16 EPIHL league winning season making 16 starts for 0+3 while also turning out 9 times for the Buffalo returning 9+13. The 5’10 forward returned to the Bison for the 2016/17 putting up 2+4 in 50 games plus 24 penalty minutes.
He returned for 2017/18 as the Herd embarked on their inaugural NIHL1 season but after discussions with Head Coach Doug Sheppard has decided to return to the Buffalo. Due to Daniel’s age league rules prevent him from playing a two-way deal so will play solely for the Buffalo going forward.
Head Coach and Director of Hockey Doug Sheppard commented; “I’d like to put on record my huge thanks to Dan for his time with the Bison. He came to us when we were short in the league winning season. We spoke and he knew that by playing more than 3 games for us he would be unable to go back to the Buffalo but he went out on a limb and committed to us playing a vital role in our league winning year. He has been a real asset to the Bison in his time with us and the management and players would like to thank him and wish him all the best for the future.”
As one steps out the roster another steps in as Doug Sheppard can announce that Sam Brooks will be starting a formal two way agreement between the Buffalo and Bison. 17 year old Sam originally learned his hockey at the Guildford Spectrum but switched to Hampshire in 2015/16 joining the Bison U18s.
Throughout his junior career the forward has put up impressive numbers and looks a really exciting prospect. He’s also played 6 games for the Buffalo last season as well as making a handful of appearances so far this season for the Basingstoke Bison.
With Sam being only 17 he is exempt from the rule that affects all players 23 and over meaning he can play up and down between the juniors, Buffalo and Bison on an unlimited basis to aid his development and will now benefit from an official two way contract.
Speaking of the addition to his squad Doug Sheppard said; “I’m pleased we’ve been able to do a deal with Sam. He’s a player who came highly recommended and we’ve been keeping an eye on for a while. He’s an exciting young player who will benefit from the ice time he’ll receive with the Buffalo but also the experience he’ll receive with the Bison. I’d like to thank him for helping us out so far this season and officially welcome him to the Bison.”
Both changes announce are effective immediately.
