Weekend Preview - The South Finals await

The time has come and it’s the final home game of 2017/18 for the Sherfield School Basingstoke Bison. Home games don’t get much bigger than this as the league’s top two teams battle it out in the Play-Off Finals for the South.

Both teams have already secured qualification for the Coventry National Finals next weekend but both will be looking to collect the honour of South Play-off Champions. For the Bison it would complete a double with one more trophy to go and for the Phantoms it would be a chance to avenge the Bison winning the league and keeping them in second place.

Bison convincingly won their Semi-Final against London Raiders 10-4 on aggregate while there was drama in the other semi-final. Swindon won the opening leg on their home ice 4-2 but had the result awarded to the Phantoms 5-0 due to icing in ineligible player. Swindon also won the second leg 4-6 in Peterborough meaning the Wildcats recorded two victories in the series but Phantoms qualified 9-6 thanks to the administrative error on Saturday night.

Bison will be at full strength for the weekend with the exception of Joe Baird who misses out injured.

Head Coach Doug Sheppard shared his thoughts ahead of the Southern Final; “We’re really looking forward to the weekend, I think the play-offs are the most exciting time of the year and the guys are going to be up for it. It’s the two teams that finished 1 and 2 in the league meeting in the play-offs finals. It should be a great game with both teams being so familiar with each other.

It will no doubt be tough on their ice but I'm sure we'll take lots of travelling fans in support. We want to leave Peterborough in a good position for Sunday’s final home game of the season.

The winner of this weekend’s series will be the top seeded Southern Team in next week’s Coventry finals weekend taking on the second seed from the North in the Semi-Finals on the Saturday while the Second Southern seed will take on the top Northern Seed with the winners facing each other on next Sunday for the honour of National Play-off Champion.

Face-off in Peterborough for Saturday’s road game will be 7.00pm ahead of a 5.30pm Face-off on home ice on Sunday. Tickets are still available from the Arena box office, by telephone to 01256 355266 or via the website. Season ticket holders will have their chosen seat reserved until 90 minutes prior to face-off upon purchasing a valid game ticket.
