A 33 save shutout from Stevie Lyle and a hat-trick from Joe Miller saw the ADD Recycling Basingstoke Bison continue their impressive start to the EPL season with a convincing 4-0 home win over the visiting Peterborough Phantoms on Saturday night.
The Bison opened the scoring 4:01 into the game as Joe Greener stepped out of the penalty box and fed Doug Sheppard who moved into the left circle and fired low past Damien King in the Phantoms goal.
Joe Miller signalled his intentions with 10 minutes gone as he ringed a wrist shot off the post, and Greg Owen was stopped on a partial breakaway just a minute later, and the score remained 1-0 at the first break.
The Herd took just 1:20 of the second period to double the score, as Greg Chambers and Joe Greener combined, and Joe Miller picked up the loose puck all alone in front of Phantoms netminder King, made his move and found the bottom of the net. The goal came on a powerplay with Phantoms Tom Norton serving a high sticks minor. Miller notched his second goal of the game with just 20 seconds remaining in the period, as he collected a pass at the blue line, moved into the Phantoms zone, patiently dangled around a sprawling defenseman and fired home from the slot, with Doug Sheppard and Joe Greener assisting.
Man of the match Miller completed his straight hat-trick at 49:59 in the 3rd period as he collected a pass from Doug Sheppard at the top of the left circle, walked in alone and roofed the puck past Damien King for what would prove to be the final goal of the game. A solid defensive effort maintained by the Bison throughout helped Stevie Lyle record his first shutout of the season.
Joe Miller and Luke Ferrara were voted man of the match for each team.
Bison scoring: Miller 3+0; Sheppard 1+2, Greener 0+3; Chambers 0+1 - Lyle: 0/33 Phantoms scoring: King: 4/36
The Bison travel to Bracknell tomorrow night where Doug Sheppard’s men will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season against the Bees.
