Impressive home win
1st of December 2012
The ADD Recycling Basingstoke Bison took another big step towards their goal of a first ever EPL title with an impressive 5-2 win over 2nd placed Manchester Phoenix on Saturday night.
The Bison went into the game without forward Joe Greener and influential defenceman Kurt Reynolds through injury, but welcomed back Joe Miller and gave a debut to new signing James Hutchinson on defence.
After a spell of initial Phoenix pressure, the Herd opened the scoring at 3:10 as Joe Rand took a pass from James Smith, skated down the right wing and backhanded a pass to the front of the net where Andy Melachrino was streaking in to tip the puck past Steve Fone in the Phoenix net. The Bison doubled their lead at 10:17 after captain Tony Redmond sent Doug Sheppard into the Phoenix zone one-on-one with a Phoenix defenceman, Sheppard made a move to round the defenceman before sending a backhand pass across the top of the crease which was collected by Jaroslav Cesky who fired into the top of the net over the sprawling Steve Fone. Despite facing 15 shots in the first period, Stevie Lyle stood tall in the Bison net and the score remained 2-0 at the first buzzer.

Phoenix opened their account at 21:10 as Ondrej Pozivil fired a wrist shot over Stevie Lyle's shoulder from the top of the left circle, assisted by Joachim Flaten and Tony Hand.
Bison restored their 2 goal lead at 29:59 as Joe Rand worked into the Phoenix zone but had the puck knocked off of his stick, only for Andy Melachrino to pick up the loose puck in the slot and fired high over Fone's glove hand, with new boy James Hutchinson picking up the 2nd assist on the goal. Phoenix fired back however, as James Neil and Richard Bentham combined to find Ciaran Long wide open at the far post and he slammed the puck home at 35:43 leaving it a one goal game going into the final period.

The Bison started the 3rd period on a powerplay after James Boothroyd had picked up a holding penalty with 32 seconds left in the 2nd period, and it took just 37 seconds for Greg Chambers to set Doug Sheppard away on a breakaway and he faked to the backhand and roofed the puck past Fone to give the Herd a 4-2 lead. Jaroslav Cesky netted the final goal of the game at 52:22 after he took a pass from James Smith, skated around the defenceman in on Fone and made a move on the goaltender before firing home on the backhand, with Doug Sheppard also assisting and the Herd saw out the remaining minutes to run out 5-2 winners.

Player-coach Doug Sheppard won the man of the match award for the Bison, with former Bison Ciaran Long winning the Phoenix award.
The Bison travel to Peterborough tomorrow night to face the Phantoms and will be on the hunt for another 4 point weekend.
