Despite winning the last period 3-1 to bring the game back level Newcastle lost out to an overtime winner from Basingstoke with only 7 seconds remaining. They did pick up a consolation point but they have now lost their last four games.
The home side took the upper hand as they took the lead with 1.34 on the clock with a goal from Mikko Purontakanen (2nd of the season). Eric Braff with his first goal of the season doubled the home sides lead at 12.27 with another powerplay goal.
David Longstaff (8th) pulled one back for the visitors with a short handed goal at 36.19, but on the same play Danny Stewart (13th) netted at 36.32 on the powerplay to restore the home sides two goal lead.
Shaun Johnson (2nd) got the Vipers to within one goal for the second time at 50.28. Then at 55.03 Mark Gouett (5th) got them on level terms at 3 apiece. After fighting back the Vipers went to sleep and allowed the Bison to go in front 90 seconds later as Brad Cruikshank (9th) scored. The visitors came back once again and tied the game up at 59.15 with a goal from Todd Jackson (4th) to send the game into overtime.
With a shot count of 10-2 the home side looked the more determined to find the winner and with only 7 seconds left Danny Stewart (14th) with his second of the game hit home the game winner for the Hampshire team.
