Weekends don't come much more difficult than the one just gone. We were gutted by our loss at home in the league game against Edinburgh. We let ourselves and the fans down badly on Sunday in the cup game against Cardiff.
When you're looking for a break-out game, you're hoping for a bounce or a call to go your way, anything that's going to kick-start your confidence and get the momentum flowing your way. We dominated the first period against Edinburgh but couldn't convert that into goals. The puck hits the pipes and in a run like ours you begin to wonder if this is going to be yet another bad night; when you're on a winning streak that sound confirms your confidence that a goal is going to come at any time.
Several fans after the game said how they had found the fight-back in the third period exciting. I've spoken before of the resilience and the tenacity of the players and of how Brent Hughes has been inspirational as our captain. We fought to the end and I can understand the fans' enjoyment.
But we lost an important game and it was a sombre locker-room after the game. We play to win and it's tough to lose. We don't carry on to the ice with us any off-ice concerns we have. When the puck drops, it is irrelevant that we're short-benched. We've chosen to be professional sportsmen and we get a couple of chances a week to show how good we are by beating the opposition.
We have chosen to play a team sport and that's how we are going to turn things round - as a team. When everything is going well, it's easy to play for each other. When things are going badly, it's even more important to contribute to the team.
Believe me, we know how those of you who travelled to Cardiff must have felt. But this is the very time we need your support most and I hope that we can count on that against Nottingham.
Kevin's injury seems to be healing well. If all goes well, he hopes to try his ankle out on the ice next week.
I said last week my new year won't start till we put some league points on the board. Let's hope I break out of 2008 real soon.
