Our home game against Nottingham last weekend was important to us for a number of reasons.
We had won a couple of games back to back and we wanted to extend that momentum. All you've got to do is to look at our roster to see how many of the team have known the feeling of being successful in an extended run of fixtures. Winning is a good habit.
Watching your team win at home is a habit that fans enjoy too. We've had some exciting, high-scoring games lately but coming back from a three goal deficit to defeat Nottingham is an experience that will stay long in the collective memory of everybody who was there, on and off the ice.
I had to smile before the game even began as I looked across at the large number of players that Nottingham had dressed. We were delighted to have been able to bring in Warren Tait and Richard Thornton for the game. That meant we had more than half as many players as the Panthers, just.
On match nights I'm starting to get used to a series of interviews after the game
Like everybody else in the rink, the journalists wanted to know what went wrong in the first period and what went right after that. I'm sure I sounded excited but the answers are probably quite boring.
The truth is we didn't play very well in the first period. We came out a little flat and Panthers were able to play to their strengths which are in offence. We were being called more than usual and two of the goals were on their powerplay.
The first thing to do at the end of the period was adjust our penalty kill. That's not exactly rocket science but from that point on we shut them out although the calls kept coming.
We knew we could play better, we acknowledged that to each other and five minutes into the second period they were struggling defensively and we were in charge.
Last week I talked in general about the character of the team. This weekend the particular qualities they showed were resilience and tenacity, characteristics which will take us far this season.
