Beast of Basingstoke
7th of August 2008
The Basingstoke Bison are delighted to announce the signing of giant Canadian Jason Goulet.

The 6ft 5in defensive defenceman weighting in at 245 pounds, will bring even more size and grit to a very impressive looking blue line core.

The native of Winnipeg played last season in the East Coast Hockey League with the Bakersfield Condors and has been tracked by Bison head coach Ryan Aldridge all summer and he has now flown the Condors' nest to head for Hampshire.

Aldridge said: "This is another great signing for the Herd and I have only had good reports about Jason. I spoke to Scott Hay at Bakersfield and he said he is beast out on the ice and a great player.

"He is a solid defensive defenceman who clears the net well. He can play the first pass out the zone, hits like a truck and is no afraid to drop his gloves for his team mates."

While at Bakersfield last season he scored once and collected five assists as well as racking up 160 minutes in penalties.

Back in season 2006/07 having been spotted by the New York Islanders scouts he played in the American Hockey League for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

His career high for goals, points and penalties came the season before that, in the Central Hockey League for Oklahoma City Blazers, where he got 10 (4+6) points and collected 248 minutes in penalties.

The 25-year-old talking from home in Winnipeg, Canada said: "I am very excited about coming to Europe to play as this will be my first time outside of North America. Having spoken to Scott (Hay) I know what to expect of the league and country so can't wait to get there."

Talking about his style of play he said: "I am pretty gritty player, I will move the bodies away from the net and I like to hit. I play strong defence and I am not afraid to stick up for my team mates. I have led my team for fights for a defenceman every year since I turned pro. Last year I should have scored more than one goal as I went close lot of times. "

He added: "I have played against Curtiss Patrick and Trevor Read in ECHL and both are good players. I know I will be expected to log up a lot more ice time in England. But for me, the more ice time I get the better I play."
