If there was ever a four pointer game - this was it. With Basingstoke three points in front of Edinburgh in the fight for the last play off spot it was all to play for these two teams. The visitors came out on top with a game winner deep into sudden death overtime but Basingstokepicked up a point for the loss in overtime and this could prove vital.
In an even first period the teams shared a couple of goals between them. The home side got the perfect start as Greg Chambers (33rd goal of the season) found the net at 3.09. The Capitals kept battling away and they restored equality just over the midway point of the first period as Colin Hemingway (32nd) found the net at 10.36.
After having gone behind in the first period the Capitals got themselves in front with a goal from Neil Hay (7th) at 31.14. With the end of the period looming and with the Capitals on the powerplay they let their guard down as Brad Cruikshank (28th) scored a delayed penalty goal at 39.41.
Tied at two apiece it was all to play for in the third period and with Edinburgh on the powerplay they made up for their late second period loss as Martin Cingel (15th) found the net at 40.11 on the powerplay. This was how it remained until the last minute when the Bison pulled the goaltender for the extra man and it paid off big time for them as Mikko Purontakanen (8th) scored what could turn out to be a huge goal in Basingstoke's season at 59.10 to send the game into sudden death overtime.
The overtime period looked as though it was going to end in stalemate but with 10 seconds left Patrik Luza (9th) hit home the game winner on the powerplay for the Capitals. Now two points between the teams and depending how the results go, the last game of the season could determine who gets that last elusive play off spot as Edinburgh entertain Basingstoke.
