The Basingstoke Bison are delighted to announce the signing of Canadian forward Brent Hughes.
The newest Herd member will add some more punch to the offensive unit of the team and last year played in the International Hockey League with the Port Huron Icehawks scoring the team's first hat-trick of the season.
The native of Toronto picked up 23 points from 71 games, as well as sitting out 59 minutes in penalties, for an Icehawks outfit who also included former Bison Mark DeSantis.
The previous year the feisty forward helped the Colorado Eagles to the Central Hockey League crown scoring 10 points in 18 games in the post season play-offs. He arrived at the Eagles after being traded from fellow CHL outfit the Amarillo Gorillas.
Up until then all of the 29-year-old's pro career had been in Texas, first with the Austin Ice Bats and then with the Amarillo, where he played alongside other Bison summer signings Trevor Read and Austin Sutter.
During that time with the Ice Bats and Gorillas he scored 149 points hitting the net 63 times while collecting 235 minutes in penalties.
Bison head coach Ryan Aldridge is overjoyed with his latest signing and said: "I think Brent is a real diamond in the rough and is someone who just needs the chance to prove himself. I think being at the Bison is that opportunity. I really think he is a great find for the team."
Talking from his home in Port Huron, Michigan Hughes said: "I am definitely excited about coming to the Bison as it has been one of my goals to play in Europe. I have heard only good things about Basingstoke from Mark DeSantis and Greg Chambers.
He added: "This is the perfect fit for me and my family and I am counting the days to the start of the season. I think the bigger ice surfaces in Britain will benefit me as I like to keep moving and use my speed to carry the puck and make plays. I love to finish my checks an get in guys faces and I don't hold back from anyone."
The high point of his career so far was winning the CHL crown with Colorado and the Bison's latest signing said: "That taught me a lot about what it takes to win and all the sacrifices you need to make and I hope to bring that with me to the Bison."
