The beginning of the League campaign was relatively predictable; although a Bison win last Saturday did not happen. We set out to pressure the Manchester defence right from the start but we could not find the early goals we had hoped for.
Having been tied 2-2 after the first period and 4-4 after the second, I felt that the scoreline did not reflect the balance of play nor the offensive opportunities generated.
We felt that we were the better hockey team but unfortunately for us, Ed Courtenay stepped off the plane the night before and that was the difference. He scored four goals without breaking into a sweat.
Moving on to Sunday, it was the daunting task of facing a Guildford team loaded with skill and speed.
Like us, the Flames had lost the previous night making this game even more crucial to win for both teams. We changed our system slightly, but the most important factor would be team defence.
Whereas on Saturday night our defencemen were often caught out of position and forwards were too late getting back into the defensive zone, Sunday was the opposite. Our defence was rock solid; Mindy, Tosh, Oaky, Kurt and Sam having exceptional games. Tommy was a wall at the back.
The forwards also played a big part defensively. Of course goals need to be scored so what do you do? Ondrej Ondrej Ondrej!!! Sharp, clinical, on fire, are a few words that come to mind.
It’s a Monday night and Jack and I are predictably wearing our Manchester United jerseys. What a game! I love the post match interviews of beaten managers complaining about penalties or “Old Trafford” decisions, but the extra time issue was a great talking point! What can you expect?
How many sports do you know where a referee decides when he wants to end the game? This may have been another motivating factor for the Bison before stepping foot onto the Guildford ice. We are all Man U fans, which of course was a prerequisite when signing for the team.
The Phantoms won everything last season which was a remarkable feat. After such an incredible season, how can they go one better? James Hutchinson will be a huge loss. He was my vote for Player of the Year. I expect him to do very well and play a big part with Hull in the Elite League.
Let me just say how much the noise and excitement affects the players. Please keep up the great support. The guys love it !
