University of Winchester helps the Basingstoke Bison charge ahead to next season
28th of February 2008
The University of Winchester is linking up with the Basingstoke Bison to help give their recruitment drive a boost next season. The new partnership will help the professional ice hockey team entice the best players to the Herd by providing individuals the chance to continue their education while playing ice hockey for the team.

Paul Baldwin, General Manager of the Basingstoke Bison said: "It is becoming more important to attract high calibre recruits to the teams in the Elite League and a couple of our rival teams already have links with local universities. Often the most sought after players are in the USA and Canada and it helps to be able to offer more than just ice hockey to ensure they compete with us."

The players who meet the entry requirements for their chosen programme of study will join the University at the start of term in September. These new Bison students will make the most of the University of Winchester's facilities, including Chute House, a study centre located in the centre of Basingstoke.

"We are delighted to have forged this partnership with the University of Winchester as they are part of the community in Basingstoke," added Paul. "It is sure to help returning Head Coach Ryan Aldridge, to attract players old and new back to Basingstoke.

"We also hope our new partnership with the University of Winchester will extend our very successful schools programme which promotes sports to local children by giving them a taste of the fast, exciting and fun sport of ice hockey."

The University of Winchester is looking forward to working with the Basingstoke Bison and creating further student recruitment opportunities in North America.

The University of Winchester has over 5,600 students studying a wide selection of courses ranging from Foundation degrees, Bachelor Honours degrees through to professional development, postgraduate Masters and Research degrees. Programmes of study span the arts, humanities, social sciences, business, education, health and social care.

Tommy Geddes, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Winchester commented: "The University is delighted to be able to support the Bison - two very different organisations working together to make Basingstoke an ever more vibrant place.

"We will be expanding our higher education provision in Basingstoke and this new partnership with the Basingstoke Bison demonstrates our strong commitment to support and be a part of the Basingstoke community."

The Basingstoke Bison were founded in 1988 and compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Their home stadium is located in the town's Leisure Park. This next ice hockey season will be the Bison's twentieth anniversary season.

The University of Winchester's Chute House is a part-time study centre located in the centre of Basingstoke, opposite Festival Place. Many of the programmes are intended for people who combine full or part-time work with study to develop new skills and gain qualifications to further their professional careers.

A range of qualifications are on offer from Foundation degrees, Bachelor Honours degrees, professional and short courses to postgraduate PGCE and Masters degrees in a variety of academic disciplines offering enhanced work-based skills.
