A night of celebration is what the Basingstoke Bison are looking to make Saturday.
The evening will start at 6.30pm with the retirement of the number 12 jersey of the founding father of the club Don Yewchin, and that will be followed by a local derby clash as the Herd take on the Bracknell Bees.
The shirt retirement is another special moment in the history of the club. Yewchin will be there along with his wife Anita and a number of his former Basingstoke team mates.
The man being honoured was instrumental in setting the club up in 1988 as ice hockey co-ordinator and it is a testament to the man and all his hard work, that the foundations he laid have meant the sport is still going strong in the town 21 years later.
Yewchin also played his part on the ice and scored the club’s first ever goal after just 10 seconds in a challenge match against Bournemouth.
The Canadian sharp shooter is also the second highest ever league goal getter at the club scoring 302 times in just 90 games including 12 in one game.
After his shirt retirement ceremony, the Herd will be keen to make sure the celebrations continue as they take on the Bees.
The Bison stung them last weekend 4-3 at the Hive, so this local derby has all the hallmarks of being a cracker of a match, which would be fitting for the occasion.
Last time out the Bison produced a brilliant comeback from 3-0 down, to record their fifth win in six games in the EPL, which is the club’s best league start since 1999.
Great news for the Herd fans is that import Joe Ciccarello will be fit to play after being caught by an accidental high stick in the face in Sunday’s game.
Basingstoke will be looking to complete their first league double against Bracknell and Bison player/coach Steve Moria said: “Bracknell certainly got the jump on us last week and I expect them to come out strong again in our own building. This time we have to be ready for them and it important that we can the early goal and build from that.
“Confidence is high in the team and we want to keep winning as long as we can.”
So don’t miss out this special night in Basingstoke, book your tickets now and they are available from the box office on (01256) 355266.
On Sunday evening, the Bison travel to Slough for another mouth watering EPL fixture.
Five of the current Herd worn Jets uniforms last season, which will add extra spice to the encounter.
Talking ahead of the game Moria said: “This is going to be a real battle. I think the rivalry between Basingstoke and Slough this season will be the fiercest in the league.”
