Mo's Mumblings
10th of October 2009
Having gone behind in both games last weekend, the guys showed a real fighting spirit to come back to win both games. It is hard to describe the feeling of winning in overtime. Tony mentioned to me afterwards how important that feeling still is. As an older player having won championships in the past, we all know that if that feeling ever disappears then that is the time to leave the sport. Winning in OT on Saturday night definitely confirmed how much we love and how important the sport of hockey is to us.

What can I say about last Sunday’s game in Bracknell? Who were the Bees playing? Was it a beer league team or just a bunch of random guys out for a leisurely skate? It was embarrassing for all of us in that first period. I will have to absorb a large proportion of the blame for the first period downfall. The players were not mentally prepared to play and I could feel it in the room beforehand. Mistakes will always be made during the course of a game, but there is no excuse for a lack of effort or a willingness to battle. I hope that we can use this as a very important learning experience and realise that we were fortunate to be able to come back from three goals down to win.

Joe is recovering from the stick incident. Facial injuries are scary but an eye injury is something you almost hold your breath hoping that the injury is not too serious. The goal he scored in Bracknell was superb driving to the net and deflecting the puck into the top corner of the net.
Jamie Line is almost ready to play again. Another three training sessions will help him towards full fitness. It will be great to have 6 foot 9 Jamie Line back playing again.

Whilst on the subject of nicknames, Ondrej Ondrej Ondrej- what are we calling him? I am sure that a lot of adjectives have come to mind when describing him. All I can say is that he is “magic.” Also, “You’re so money”, which is a phrase from the movie Swingers comes to mind. Then there is the “crusher” or the “hammer” which might describe another player. It’s all good fun! I really think that the Bison fans will see a lot of personality from the players this season.

Lastly, can someone please explain the ruling on icing and when a penalty will be assessed? Actually, I know the ruling but not the whens and hows. It appears that it is a judgment call; maybe it’s a penalty if this happens, maybe not.

Lastly and most importantly, I would like to welcome and thank Don Yewchin and his wife Anita for returning to Basingstoke. On behalf of the Bison organisation, I would like to pay tribute to Don's achievements. Don was the driving force introducing ice hockey to the people of Basingstoke. He was also the inspiration in setting up the junior development program. We are extremely happy to honour Don tonight with the retirement of his shirt, number 12!
