Saturday: Bison fail to trick or treat

By Graham Merry

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison missed a trick and a treat, as they lost 8-4 to the visiting Manchester Phoenix on Halloween night.

The visitors made the perfect start with former Bison Greg Wood netting after just 38 seconds.

The Herd then hit back and had the better of the opening session, with Ondrej Lauko and a rocket shot from Steve Moria giving them the lead at the first break.

The second session, turned into a real fright for the home side as the Phoenix scored three times in the first seven minutes, from Adam Walker scored either side of a Tony Hand tap in.

The Bison gave their fans some hope, as Joe Ciccarello tipped home a Mindy Kieras blue line shot at 33:49.

However, the Phoenix replied within a minute later from Andre Payette and Ed Courtenay made it 6-3 by the second buzzer.

Phoenix’s seventh of the game from Payette was quickly followed by the Herd’s fourth from Nicky Chinn, before Courtenay wrapped up the scoring shorthanded.

Sunday: Scimitars put Bison to the sword

By Graham Merry

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison nearly produced another great comeback on Sunday night, only to have their hopes dashed of victory at the Sheffield Scimitars 5-3.

The home side were the quickest out of the blocks and opened the scoring at 5:25, as Stephen Wallace netted from Lee Haywood.

Sheffield’s great start continued as 22 seconds later Matt Haywood made it 2-0.

The Scims then netted a third, all in the space of woeful 77 seconds for the Herd as this time Aaron Strawson fired past Davey Lawrence.

At that point Bison player/coach Steve Moria called a time-out and read the riot act, which did the trick and stopped the home side’s scoring spree.

The Herd opened their account at 24:18 shorthanded, as Joe Nicholls sat in the sin bin.

Andrew Hemmings finding the back of the net finishing a great move involving Joe Ciccarello and Mindy Kieras.

With Sheffield coming under increasing pressure they called a time-out at 29:09, but the move back fired as 23 seconds later, the Bison reduced the Scims lead to one, as captain Nicky Chinn netted assisted by Moria and man-of-the-match Tom Long.

That was the way the score stayed to the second break and then 64 seconds into the final period, Hemmings netted his second of the night to level the game 3-3 night.

The Scims hit back 49 seconds later as James Archer edged the home side in front again.

Then in the final two minutes, Sheffield made sure of the victory as Wallace scored his second of the night to complete a 5-3 win.

The victory meant the Yorkshire side had taken the scalps of Milton Keynes, Slough and Basingstoke in the past two weeks.
