Forthcoming Weekend Preview
6th of November 2009
Bonfire night may have been yesterday, but on Saturday night there will be some more fireworks in the Basingstoke Arena, as the Bison do battle with the Romford Raiders.

When these sides last met it took only three seconds for the gloves to be dropped and the Raiders hard hitting tactics are sure to make it another night of fast and furious action.

Winning is the only thing on the Basingstoke player’s mind as they look to repeat a 6-1 success over the Raiders earlier in the season, down at Rom Valley Way.

Slovak sniper Ondrej Lauko led the scoring on that night with a hat-trick and he will pick up the Bison’s October Player of the Month award before Saturday’s game.

Also finding the net last time against Romford were Ollie Bronnimann, Steve Moria and Joe Ciccarello, while the Raiders lone strike came from Dean Tonks.

Since that game, the Essex team have axed imports Michal Palik and Kamil Vavra.
They have been replaced by flying Finn forward Mikko Silvennoinen and coach
Jesse Hammill, has once again suited up.

This season Romford have yet to secure a victory, while the Herd are looking to end their recent winless drought of three game.

One Bison player keen to enjoy another win over Romford, will be Essex boy Tom Long, who spent two seasons playing at Rom Valley Way.

The forward spent last weekend playing on defence and is set to remain there with defencemen Kurt Reynolds and Tony Redmond ruled out again this weekend.

There is more positive news on Scott Spearing, as the forward is expected to start light training this week, with a view of being back in the team by the end of the month.

Talking ahead of the game Bison player/coach Steve Moria said: “We have three guys out at the moment which is not helping us, but we determined to put that behind us. I am looking for us to go out strong from the opening face-off and get a victory.

“Romford will be just as eager as they are trying to break their losing streak. It is important we stop them scoring early. As I don’t want to be playing catch-up as we have in the last few games this season.”

Tickets for what should another exciting Saturday night game are still available from the box office on (01256) 355266

On Sunday, the Herd travel to local rivals the Guildford Flames for their third meeting of the campaign, with the series so far level 1-1 with the away team having won both previous meetings.

The Bison will be looking to continue that sequence, but Moria knows it is going to be hard and said: “They have three very strong offensive lines that can all score. So we have to play a very solid defensive game there and hope to take our chances when they come.”
