Saturday: Bison ram Raiders for 12
By Graham Merry
The Basingstoke Bison got back to winning ways on home ice as they crushed the visiting Romford Raiders 12-4 on Saturday night.
The home side never looked back after Steve Moria opened the scoring after 57 seconds and Ondrej Lauko doubled the advantage in the fourth minute.
The Herd giving home league debuts to Daniel Lackey of the Basingstoke Buffalo and Joe Edwards from the Oxford City Stars, built up a 4-0 lead as Chris Wiggins and Andy Hemmings both scored.
The Raiders then opened their account with a great breakaway strike from Mikko Silvennoinen just 39 seconds before the first buzzer.
The second session saw the man-of-the-match Jamie Line grab a couple of goals including a shorthanded marker and then Joe Ciccarello made it 7-1.
Romford responded with strikes from Joe Allen and Matt Turner before the break and they then scored the first goal of the final period thanks to Jon Sitko.
Within in a minute the Bison added number eight with another shorthanded goal this time from Nicky Chinn, and then on the same powerplay Ciccarello netted again despite the Herd being out numbered on the ice.
The Bison reached double figures thanks to a Moria strike and then Lauko wrapped up the scoring with two goals to complete his hat-trick.

Sunday: Bison lose another thriller
By Graham Merry
THE BASINGSTOKE Bison lost in a thriller on Sunday night at the Spectrum going down 3-2 to the Guildford Flames.
The visitors had Tyrone Miller returning to one of his old stamping grounds as he made his Basingstoke debut in defence, but they were still minus illness victim Tom Long and injured trio Scott Spearing, Kurt Reynolds and Tony Redmond.
The home side gave the start in goal to Mark Lee, leaving Basingstoke-born Dean Skinns, who back stopped the Flames to victory last time over the Bison to watch from the bench.
The first 20 minutes belonged to the Flames and the Bison managed just three shots.
They opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Lukas Smital produced a great wrist shot to beat Tom Annetts in the Bison goal, after linemates Rob Lamey and Martin Masa had carved out the chance.
Within two minutes, the Flames had added a second as Nathan Rempel elected to shot on a three-on-two breakaway.
At that point, the Bison looked out of the game, but Bison man-of-the-match Annetts made some fine saves to stop Guilford adding any more to the tally as the score remained 2-0 at the first buzzer.
It was then Basingstoke's turn to have a much the better of the second session and just 87 seconds into it, Bison player/coach Steve Moria hauled his side back into the contest.
The Herd were then given their second powerplay of the night, which saw Lee in the Flames net come under increased pressure.
The final period was a more even affair and the Bison hit the pipework, before Guildford's man-of-the-match Rempel bagged himself his second goal of the night at 51:38 to make it 3-1.
The Bison were then given a powerplay as Rick Plant departed for tripping, but the visitors were unable to score.
However, the short-staffed Herd kept going and Moria netted his second of the game with just three minutes left to set-up a grandstand finish.
The Bison then went close from Nicky Chinn and then in the final minute, only a great save from Lee from Joe Ciccarello stopped the game was going into overtime.
