Saturday: Overtime heartbreak for Bison

By Graham Merry

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison suffered the heartbreak of losing in overtime on Saturday night 3-2 at the Swindon Wildcats.

Aaron Nell grabbed the winner after the Herd had wiped out a two goal deficit in the final period.

It was the Bison’s leading goal scorer Slovak Sniper Ondrej Lauko, who scored both Bison goals on the powerplay.

The odds looked stacked against the visitors as they trailed 2-0 going into the last 20 minutes, after they lost captain Nicky Chinn dismissed on a high sticks call in the middle session.

The first period had seen the home side build up a 2-0 advantage thanks to Jan Krajicek and Jozef Kohut both goals coming on the powerplay.

Sunday: Late show denys gutsy Bison

By Graham Merry

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison turned in a gutsy performance on Sunday night, but two goals in the final five minutes saw visiting Slough Jets take the victory 4-2.

The Herd were minus four of their star players, as captain Nicky Chinn sat out a one match suspension after picking up a match penalty the previous night.

Scott Spearing was on the bench for the game, but did not see any ice time, while Kurt Reynolds and Tony Redmond were still ruled out of action.

The visitors came out the blocks flying and Tom Annetts in the home goal had to be alert to keep them out.

Then with a help of a five-on-three powerplay, the Jets opened the scoring as Paddy Ward's blue line shot deflected off Bison man-of-the-match Sam Oakford on its way to the net.

Despite being under lot of pressure, the Bison did not give up and took the chance on their own powerplay, with Tom Long, captain of the Herd in the absence of Chinn firing in from the blue line and Ondrej Lauko deflected the puck past Gregg Rockman.

The next powerplay of the night, saw the Bison take the lead as Mindy Kieras' shot came off the pads of Rockman, and the impressive Andy Hemmings wristed the puck over the prone netminder at 24:35.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Jets hit back straight away with Dan Davies scoring 38 seconds later.

With the game looking more and more likely to go to overtime, the Jets finally broke the deadlock as Koulikov's shot hit the pads of Annetts finished in the goal crease and Slough man-of-the-match Joe Greener reacted first poking the puck home at 55:53.

Before the Herd had a chance to mount a reply, the Jets added a killer fourth goal, Peter Poljacek's shot was deflected pass Annetts.

The victory left Slough very much in the driving seat for a semi-final place in the Premier Cup, while the Herd with three games left at home to Swindon and away to Peterborough and Milton Keynes may well have to win all three to book their last four place.
