Victory can light up Bison season
By Graham Merry
THE BASINGSTOKE Bison will hope that lightning does not strike twice in the next few days.
Because Herd face the Milton Keynes Lightning in two different competitions in the space of three days.
Thursday’s encounter on home ice is in the Planet Ice Shield, while Saturday’s game in Buckinghamshire is an English Premier League fixture and also doubles up as Premier Cup tie.
The Bison will be looking for a victory to keep themselves in contention for a place in the final in what is their third group game of four in the competition.
Currently Peterborough head the three-team group with four points from three games, the Bison are second with two from two and MK have one loss to their name.
Victory for the Herd would stampede them to top spot in the standings and give them one foot in the final.
Bison player/coach Steve Moria said: “We want to progress in this competition as whenever there is a trophy up for grabs we want to win it. That is what will be on our minds for this game.”
On Saturday (7pm), the sides meet again for what – for the Bison – is an important league contest, but on top of that is a must win Premier Cup game.
The Herd will only be minus defenceman Sam Oakford, as long as they do not pick up any injuries in tonight’s game.
Bison boss Moria said: “We have to win our last two games in the Cup to stand any chances of making the semi-finals and, being a one-game weekend, we can focus all our efforts.
“Milton Keynes are a hard working team and are sure to come at us from the opening face-off. They are a team which will have a lot possession and will out-shoot you. We have to make sure we take our chances when they come.
He added : “Last week, we missed out on some training which meant we were a little rusty in the first period against Bracknell. This week we will train on Tuesday and Friday and, with a game on Thursday, we will be ready for the game.”
When the sides last met in October in a league clash in Basingstoke, MK won 5-3 with two late goals. This after Ondrej Lauko’s brace and a Steve Moria single had tied the game at 3-3.
