Weekend Review - Highs and Lows for Bison
4th of January 2010
Basingstoke Bison 2-1 Manchester Phoenix

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison opened 2010 in the best possible way with a 2-1 win over the visiting title chasing Manchester Phoenix.

It was the first time in five attempts that the Herd had beaten their Lancashire rivals. It was well deserved after a superb game, which kept the fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

Both teams were minus an import, Joe Ciccarello for Basingstoke and Ed Courtenay for Manchester.

The Bison got off to a great start as Tom Long won the puck off Robert Lachowicz by the boards and thanks to Jamie Line and then Nicky Chinn the puck found its way back to Long unmarked in the slot to score at 2:01.

The advantage was doubled at 10:44 as Chinn held off Luke Boothroyd down the right wing and crossed for Tony Redmond, who was voted Bison’s December Player of the Month, to slot home.

The second session saw the Phoenix out shot the Bison 25-7, but Davey Lawrence stood tall in the home net, while Long nearly added a Bison third when he hit the post late on.

The game was end-to-end in the final period and Manchester broke the duck at 48:24 as Andre Payette netted from close range from a right wing from Tony Hand.

That set up a tense finale, but the Bison did well to keep the puck in the Phoenix end zone as the clocked ticked down. So it was not until 19 seconds from time that they were finally able to pull their netminder.

However, in the limited time they were unable to carve out a good goal scoring opportunity and with three seconds left Chinn hit the post of the empty net with a clearance from in front of his own net.

It did not matter as the Bison made three wins on the trot and climbed to fifth in the EPL table.

Guildford Flames 4-1 Basingstoke Bison

THE BASINGSTOKE Bison’s three game winning streak went up in smoke on Sunday night, as they lost at local rivals the Guildford Flames 4-1.

Hopes were high in the Herd camp after their performance against Manchester and with the home side suffering injuries to imports Nathan Rempel and Lubomir Hurtaj, it left them with only three imports like the Bison.

However, it did not stop them taking the lead thanks to Milos Melicherik, as he netted his own rebound at 7:15.

Basingstoke levelled thanks to Andy Hemmings, as he finished a move involving Ondrej Lauko and Steve Moria to tie the scores at the first buzzer.

The second session saw both teams have chances to take the lead, but it was the home side that did it with a blue line blast from David Savage just 20 seconds from the hooter.

The Bison’s cause was not helped in the middle period, as they lost Chris Wiggins to a 2+10 checking from behind penalty.

With the score at 2-1 the fourth goal was always going to critical and it went to the Flames thanks to some individual magic from Lukas Smital at 49:13. The forward went onto share the Guildford man-of-the-match award with netminder Mark Lee.

It was then left Melicherik to make sure of the victory as he put away a Stuart Potts rebound 70 seconds from the end of the game.

Bison defenceman Mindy Kieras picked up the visitors man-of-the-match award.
