Mo's Mumblings
7th of January 2010
I have always divided the hockey season into two halves, pre Christmas and post Christmas. Since the Christmas break we have won 3 times in the 4 games that we have played. If we can continue at this rate, we will finish strongly and move up the table. Although winning the League is still mathematically possible, it would be a mammoth task.

Why does snow cause so much chaos in the UK? Every other country in the world seems to be able to cope. I had to make Tuesday’s practice optional as guys were scared of being stranded in Basingstoke (if they made it that far).We have players from Bracknell, Guildford, South London, and Kent who travel here 2-3 times per week to train. It is a huge commitment for hockey players at this level. Many have day time jobs and many have families.

Training cannot be underestimated. If we do not train, we lose match sharpness and our overall level of fitness will drop. I love the snow and do not have any problems with it (so far). Snow on a road is like dust or pebbles or leaves on a road. I find it extremely easy to drive on. On the other hand, if the roads are icy, then there is a huge problem. Driving home from training tonight, in which 8 guys skated, I found myself going 5 MPH behind a car. The guy finally turned off and I could resume driving at 30MPH until the next car appeared.

In Alaska, cars engines are plugged in to keep the engines from freezing up. Temperatures can reach -50 degrees. You can’t go outside for more than a few seconds. Your nose hairs immediately freeze! But, cars will travel at 60 MPH on duel carriageways.
I hope that we get the whole team out on Thursday as we prepare for another important weekend of ice hockey. I hope the snow eases off by Sunday so that all of you can come watch the Bison!!

I would also like to mention that Scott Spearing and I have registered to ride in the London to Paris cycle during the summer. Other Bison members may also take part. We hope to raise lots of money for a children’s charity.
