Weekend Preview - Bison continue quest for fourth place.
25th of February 2010
The Basingstoke Bison are not giving up on their quest for fourth place and the Romford Raiders are the next side that stands in their way. They come to Basingstoke on Saturday night for a game which has a 6.30pm face-off.

The Herd have so far this season won the previous five encounters between the sides including two on home ice 12-4 and 8-2.
In those games leading scorer Ondrej Lauko helped himself to seven goals and the Slovak hot shot will be keen to end to his tally on Saturday. Bottom placed Romford have had a miserable season and on Wednesday night lost to the visiting Slough Jets 5-3, but have upset the Manchester Phoenix twice and would love another scalp before the season ends.

Meanwhile, the Bison have reeled off five straight wins after their brilliant 4-2 victory in Manchester last Sunday and also have won their last 10 on home ice with their latest success being a 6-1 win against the Bracknell Bees. British forward Shaun Thompson scored in both games, his first goals since returning from Hull.

Bison player/coach Steve Moria is keen for his side to carry on their winning ways, but is taking nothing for granted on Saturday. He said: “We want to keep winning, but to do that we have to work hard and stick to our game plan. If we start to try and do things fancy, that is when the breakdowns will happen and goals will be scored against us. We need to make sure that we only allow them to shot from out wide.”

One player who will be missing from the Basingstoke line-up is Canadian import Joe Ciccarello as he is having an operation on his knee this week. He will then be out of the line-up for at least four weeks so hopefully he will return for the play-offs. Moria said: “It has been a frustrating year for Joe and I really hope he is back in the line-up by the end of the season, but we will have to wait and see.”

Tickets for Saturday’s game which should be another cracker are still available from the box office on (01256) 355266.

On Sunday night, the Bison had north to Sheffield to face the Scimitars hoping to record their first victory at Ice Sheffield this season at the third attempt.

Moria said: “We have won in Peterborough and then in Manchester and the past two so confidence is high and I will be looking for a win in Sheffield.”

The game on Sunday has a 5.30pm face-off.
