Weekend Preview - Bison face top two weekend
11th of March 2010
The Basingstoke Bison end of season stampede could yet yield them third spot in the English Premier League, but to do that they will have to beat the top two this weekend.

On Saturday night, the Herd travel to the Hangar to face the Slough Jets, before on Sunday night entertaining the league leaders Milton Keynes Lightning.

The EPL top dogs lost on their last visit to Basingstoke in a thrilling encounter which went all the way to a sudden death penalty shoot-out.

Sunday’s contest which starts at 5.30pm is sure to be just as close as both teams have a lot to play for.

The Bison will be looking to return to winning ways in their own rink, after last Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to the Jets ended a 12-game victory streak in Basingstoke.

The Herd returned to the win saloon the following night, as they stung the Bracknell Bees 6-4 at the Hive. The league’s leading marksman Ondrej Lauko led the way scoring four times to take his tally to 54 for the year. The victory moved Basingstoke into a three way battle with the Guildford Flames and Manchester Phoenix for third spot.

Talking ahead Sunday’s clash with the leaders Bison player/coach Steve Moria said: “They are the most complete hockey team in this league and we know it is going to be tough to beat them, but if we play as well as we and being in front of our own fans I am sure we can get the win.”

Tickets are still available from the box office on (01256) 355266 for what will be another great night of family entertainment.
Last weekend, an EPL record for Basingstoke of 1,471 packed into the Arena, so it maybe worth booking early.

On Saturday night, the Bison have a chance for quick revenge on Slough, when they travel to Berkshire for a game which has a 6.30pm face-off.

The Herd won their first visit of the season, but last time around the Jets took the win and victory last week in Basingstoke saw them take a 3-2 lead in the league series.

The Bison are not determined to tie that up and Moria said: “We know they will come at us strong early on and we have to be ready for that. If we can keep it close going into the third period I feel we have a great chance of coming out with the win as we did earlier in the season.”
