What a shame the 1200 fans who gave us such great support in our match against Nottingham on Saturday night in Basingstoke were not with us the following evening in Hull. Six -four down with less than two minutes to go. Exactly the kind of situation where the real character of the Bison team shines through. Our 7-6 win was one to savour.
I've been saying all season that we had a squad which would compete until the final second. I know there's a lot of discussion about how we cope with a short bench, how we cope with the injuries we take. What I hope is obvious is that, whatever the problems, we can't wait to get out on the ice and compete.
I don't think the crowds are growing because we're overcoming problems. I think it's because more and more people in Basingstoke have realised that they will see a team that plays positive and entertaining hockey, however short the bench, whatever injuries players are carrying.
We want to play the kind of hockey we enjoy and it's great to feel out on the ice that the crowd is enjoying itself just as much. Hockey Night in Basingstoke has become a special occasion for all of us.
I'd like to congratulate Greg Owen and Greg Chambers on their selection for the G.B. team. Greg Owen is in my opinion the best British centre playing in the Elite League. He's outstanding at the face-off, always first in on the forecheck and back on defence and an essential part of our highly successful line alongside Brad Cruikshank and Greg Chambers.
This is Chubbs first call up to the GB squad. You only need to look at his stats to see the progress he has made this season. He has always been a smart player, comfortable on the ice. He came back this season much fitter and has risen to the challenge of playing to his true potential. He reads the game well, plays telling passes and has become a genuine two-way player.
I had never intended to continue to play this season, but it's been a pleasure to play different roles and to experience the understanding there is among the guys.
Thanks for your tremendous support . We'll be there on Saturday, enjoying ourselves. Come along and join in the fun.
